CameraPnP Align v1: The Ultimate 3ds Max Camera Match Script for Complex Photomontages

Hello Everyone, this is Jamie here. Welcome to another update!

Today, I am incredibly excited to walk you through a quick process of camera matching an extremely difficult shot in 3ds Max. If you work in ArchViz, you have likely received a background plate where the building isn't perfectly square and sits at a challenging angle.

There is no advanced computer vision system in the world that can guess all the specifics of a non-box building simply by looking at one photo and its vanishing lines. To solve this problem for 3D artists, I have developed a unique script: CameraPnP Align v1.

## How CameraPnP Align v1 Automates Perspective Matching

The workflow is designed to be highly accurate, streamlining the photomontage process in under a minute:

  1. Merge the 3D Building & Load the Photo : Start a fresh 3D scene, run the script, and load your background photo. Merge your 3D building outline into the scene, ensuring all facades seen in the photo are visible in the 3D viewport.

  1. Automatic Camera Creation: Click the "Create Camera" button. CameraPnP auto-detects your renderer (V-Ray, Corona, Arnold, etc.) and creates the correct Physical Camera with accurate property mapping. It also automatically matches the render output to the background image resolution.

  2. Add Point Pairs: This is where the magic happens. The script needs at least four "Pair Point" markers spread across the building.

    • Click Add Pair.

    • Vertex-snap to a corner on your 3D building.

    • The CameraPnP dialog will prompt you with the photo. Click the exact same corner on the 2D image.

    • Accept the pixel.

  3. Solve Camera Perspective: Once you have your points mapped, click Solve Camera. If every point is green, the perspective is accurately solved! If any point is red, simply select it, re-click the photo pixel, and solve again.

Once solved, your 3D camera will be matched 100% to the perspective of your background plate, once you move the camera closer.
